Mastering Digital Black and White, by Amadou Diallo, is like a laser beam illuminating the rapidly changing world of digital photography. And, like a laser it doesn't waste any strength, focusing all of its considerable energy on clear and concise explanations of almost every topic that the contemporary photographer needs to understand.
Not withstanding its title, this book explores the needs of the color photographer as well as the B&W specialist.
I know of no current book that covers as much as comprehensively and concisely as Mastering Digital Black and White, by Amadou Diallo.
Michael Reichmann, The Luminous Landscape
I recommend this book to beginners and experienced photographers alike for gaining that needed knowledge to give them an edge in the creation of black and white images and prints. It really covers all the basics from equipment, to file handling, to printing and beyond. For those of us who have been around for awhile, it introduces new ideas and technologies that we may have not be totally aware of. For me, it inspired me to recommit myself to my chosen career. Larry Danque, Studio Manager, Cone Editions Press
...the best resource I have ever seen for creating digital b/w prints...It gives a thorough overview of what is available and the different routes that can be taken to achieve high quality b/w prints. Highly recommended. Jenny Ellerbe, Photographer
I have found this book to be a very comprehensive overview of digital black and white with solid explanations of equipment, technique and even the presentation of finished works. It is refreshing to have an authoritative guide through digital black and white, which has been so cutting-edge that photographers like myself had to rely on contradictory scraps of information scattered throughout the web. I wish this book had existed when I first started my journey into digital capture and printing of black and white photographs. I do hope Amadou works on a sequel as there is so much more to this topic and he's proven himself as a good writer and reliable guide. Roger Smith, Photographer
The structure...visually and conceptually works really well and illustrations are clear and to the point. What a book like this does is give us a snap shot in history of the state of things now...like Henry Fox Talbot's diaries of how to make photograms in the 1830's. John Dean, Dean Imaging
In 2003 we visited a gallery in New York. We were quite impressed by some of the images shown by Amadou Diallo. His work clearly demonstrated that he was mastering the art of B&W printing. In this new book Amadou Diallo shares his passion and experience. If you are into dedicated B&W printing this book will prove very helpful for you. Highly recommended! Uwe Steinmueller, Digital Outback Photo
...top quality in content, editing, and physical production. Diallo's writing is crisp. The material is skilfully introduced. The organization encourages use for reference and for browsing. [Ansel] Adams and [Minor] White on the Zone System come to mind. An important book. You'll want this edition and the next. John Kelly, Photographer
With 35 years of negatives and proofs in my archive, I've been struggling to figure out how to get my work out of the closet and into the world. Your book is a Godsend. It gives me ballast as I move forward in this brave new world of digital realities. It is clear, concise, extremely well-written and organized, with important, key illustrations in every section. Lucy Hilmer, Photographer
It's really a superb book. I learned a great deal from it. There are
some other titles that purport to cover digital B&W but this is head
and shoulders above the other ones I've seen. Currently the
undisputed first choice for anyone who wants to learn to do digital
B&W of the highest quality.

...[Mastering Digital Black and White] is my constant digital darkroom companion. ...the control that Photoshop offers me, coupled with my Epson R2400 printer, ABW driver, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl AND your very well written book have completely changed my workflow and life. I was so delighted with your book, I ordered copies for several of my photographic colleagues. Barry Rau, Photographer Visual Epic Productions
Thanks for and congratulations on Mastering Digital Black and White. One of the finest books I have read so far! As you dedicate this work to Bruce Fraser I can only comment that your ability to communicate complex technical issues is following his level: clear, reflecting a deep understanding of the subject and always put in a nutshell. Creating monochrome digital images means more than just removing color and that’s what this book is all about. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to become involved in digital monochrome imagery. Shutterbug's Top Digital Books of 2007, Joe Farace
