There is a class action suit being brought by some endusers against Apple for misleading marketing claims regarding their laptop screen performance. I point this out because it reveals a larger issue common to virtually all laptops. No matter the computer vendor, LCD screens are made by only a handful of companies. So this is not an Apple issue so much as an industry one. The brouhaha arose because the laptop screens are 6bit (instead of 8bit) devices, capable of roughly 262k native colors, versus the "millions" of colors we are used to with CRTs and external LCDs. The attached screen shot shows Phillip's specs for the display used in some of Apple's Macbooks. Apparently a dithering technology is being used to reach the millions of colors listed in the Macbook specs.
The upshot of all this is that while laptops become an ever increasing necessity in the mobile lifestyle, photographers would be wise to add an external LCD for any home/office use that requires serious image evaluation, color or grayscale.
