Amadou,

I just received your book and am very impressed with it so far. I am using Lightroom (don't have CS3 yet) and have been converting to grayscale with it. It looks like CS3 has a similar interface and my question involves the sliders. In the book you use some extreme manipulation with them, +/- 100 points or greater. However when I try anything more than a modest adjustment in Lightroom, I get a major boost in noise. What's your magic?

Thanks,

Jenny Ellerbe

Hi Jenny,
THanks for the kind words about the book.
While LR and ACR do share some capabilities, the greyscale conversion algorithms are significantly different, as you've found. You're essentially playing with hue and luminance adjustments in LR and large moves can start to show noise and other artifacts. Certainly the higher the ISO and darker the exposure, the more prominent those artifacts will become. So the short answer is the weighted scales are completely different in LR, ACR, and the Black and White tool in PS. While you should be able to acheive similar results using either method, the paths to get there will be quite different.
