Just ran into this situation with a client. HP's driver download page states that the Mac OS 10.5 install disk loads the latest printer driver for the Z printers. But Leopard actually installs an earlier driver (v 4.2.x). The current driver (v 5.1) must instead be downloaded from HP's site. Look for it under the OS 10.2-10.4 pulldown.
BUT, HP Tech support warned that if you're running Leopard, it's very very important to choose the driver only download from the HP site. Keep the HP Print Utility that came with the Leopard install or bad things will happen, like not being able to calibrate any papers.
Hopefully they will correct their web site info and put the 10.5-ready driver where it belongs. Because as I found out today, the older driver does not play nicely with the latest firmware (v 6.0.0.8).

OK please help a layman like myself get my Leopard machine running, as my old g4 is too slow for my Z3100 44: printer. I, before I read your advice, downloaded all the latest drivers and utilities from the HP site for os 10.5. So you are suggesting that I somehow disable the latest utility and get the utilty. Because Im not sure where to grab the "old" utility. Can I simply use my Leopard disk after uninstalling the "latest" HP
Print Utility?
And a public note to HP support for not helping me whatsoever in my quest to get my Macbook Pro to properly print to my Z3100 44" printer. I welcome advice and help from all out there. and thanks in advance.

The HP Printer Utility that Leopard installs is fine. Leave it as is. Download the DRIVER ONLY from the HP site and install it. Current driver version is 5.1. You want to have firmware 6.0.0.8, driver 5.1 and you're set.
